5 Things To Do This Summer

Olivia & Hunter pickin' blueberries July 2007
Olivia and Hunter eating blueberries. Hunter is eating his FOR REAL - he is my "Blueberry Boy." We had some interesting diapers that summer. He would eat blueberries by the POUND! Olivia is "fake eating"/posing for the camera. She is my PICKY one and doesn't like blueberries!

TOO CUTE! Hunter wearing his "blueberry bucket" and fast asleep after a few hours of picking! We left with over 17 pounds of berries - mostly thanks to Caleb & Ammon. I spent a whole day washing berries and delivering them to friends and baking and freezing. YUM!

My ORIGINAL "5 Things To Do This Summer" List:
1. Go blueberry pickin' - this has become a favorite tradition the past couple years!
2. Do lots of quilting!!! Finish at least ONE! (Catch up on my "Favorite Things" quilt, finish the Baldridge family block exchange "Americana" quilt, make a scrappy quilt with retro fabrics.
3. READ! READ! READ! Make a dent in my goodreads "to read" list.
4. Do the library reading program with my kids.
5. Go on at least one waterfall hike.

5 Unexpected Things I DID This Summer:
1. Work for 3 weeks at our office as our employee was out with viral meningitis.
2. Enjoy 3 hours on the Washougal River with my family and inflatable rafts during a record heat wave. We drifted for several miles. This will be on my "original" list for next year. :)
3. Watch "Angels & Demons" twice in second-run "dollar" theaters with hubby - 2nd time with Mom, Bridget, Lola, Caleb & Austin as well.
4. Ride on the back of my dad's ATV in Utah with my 13-year-old driving. (He enjoyed it MUCH more than I did.)
5. Realize my fear of heights on a zipline "challenge course" at Heber Valley Camp during a Baldridge Family Reunion. (My legs were SHAKING - but the zipline WAS fun!)

So, how'd I do with the "original" list?
1. The blueberry picking didn't happen. :( Even though I had a friend offer to let us pick on her property for free. I really missed the fresh blueberries this year!
2. I only got 2 quilt blocks completed.
3. Didn't make much of a dent in my "to read" list, but I did finish a few books.
4. Lost the drive to motivate my kids to read after too much resistance. For my brood, reading just can't compete with being outside in the sunshine and playing with friends.
5. Waterfall hike hasn't happened YET, but there is still ONE MORE WEEK!

I totally know how the good intentioned lists get tossed by the wayside and we end up doing things we may have never thought we'd do and much more. Summers are a great time for that. The fall and winter sound like such cozy times to catch up on all that reading that you want to do... and I bet the kids might want to do some reading, too?! :)

Good stuff going on and good stuff planned. This summer has been a long one. I am looking forward to the fall here in Utah. I agree with Cassie, your kids will probably be swayed to read more in the colder months. It is just too fun being outside with friends in the summer.

Oh, blueberries! I miss those. I remember having them and picking them in our Bella Vista house. And the blackberries too! They bring back memories and unfortunately I don't get them much these days. We have some blueberry bushes around here, but I'm not sure if they're edible or not.

Jeannie, I was also going to say, that I have really grown to love appliquing lately. I guess I have practiced enough that I kind of know what I'm doing now and I find it pretty easy now (so now I can finally enjoy it!) I don't know, maybe you would enjoy it too, after a bit of practice!?!
